Hi Everyone,

I'm planning on opening a high-end coffee shop, based on a similar model to Zoka in Seattle or Flat White and Milk Bar in London.

However, I'm not sure where to do it. I want to be in a decently big city in either the US or Australia, but those are my only criteria. I'm from Washington state and live in London now, but I'm tired of it and planning to leave.

In your opinion, what cities are right for nice coffee shops that just don't have any (or don't have enough)?
Have you been somewhere lately that just seems like the kind of city that would have great coffee, and you just couldn't find any? Places with a lot of universities often have a good coffee culture.

What do you think?

Just saw an ad on Craigslist about how one of the neighboring villages would like to grow...

The best kept secret in Dane county is the Village of Belleville. Small, quaint, charming community along the Sugar River is looking to add your specialty shop to our historic beautiful village. Nestled between the tourist route of Paoli artistin galleries and the Swiss town of New Glarus many tourist pass threw our village. Projected growth/development in the next 5 years on the west edge of town. So if you would like to open a book store, coffee shop, bakery, etc come see our town, we would be happy too see you here! Just 20 miles south of Madison! E-mail if you would like more information

It's bigger than Tiskilwa, but not by much.

I did not add tpyos to the quoted passage.

Seriously, though - Milwaukee is a maybe, as is Madison.  The trouble with Madison is trying to appeal to the dozen or so Madisonians who want good coffee in a cafe, rather than getting the 20,000 students who want a stylish cafe where they can "study" (read: socialize, but not really) all afternoon for the price of a muffin and a cup (hint: NOT STATE STREET).  Milwaukee... well, you'd have to assess for yourself if you want to go head to head with Alterra.

I freely admit that I am biased and would like to be able to get a really good coffee on my way to work (at somewhere other than Bradbury's - which is great, but not always what I'm in the mood for).

If you'd like to be back in your home state, think about Redmond, WA.  Here's the reasoning:

  • your business plan will not include educating your market on premium coffee
  • lots of disposible income - setting up within walking distance of the MSFT campus would be a goldmine
  • the only decent espresso in Redmond moved to Oregon a few years ago when Victor's changed hands
  • yes there is great competition in Kirkland, Seattle, and some further out, but that'll just keep you on your game :)

Downsides?

  • WA state will heavily tax your business - be sure to understand the B&O tax as part of your business plan
  • I'm sure you'll be asked for 20oz milk drinks where you can't even taste the shot(s)
  • there is great competition in the surrounding cities, but that'll just keep you on your game...

Peruse the Regional Threads.  Those with the fewest responses will be your target audiences.
As far as I'm concerned, though, anywhere in Florida.  There are many great little cafes, with excellent and very pretty kit, but not a soul that's willing to make the effort to learn how to use it.
You could rule the world in Orlando, Tampa, Coral Gables, Miami, Key West, Tallahassee, etc.

Although, you may want to go check out which of those cities you'd be willing to live in.
Remember, in Florida, the further north you go, the further south you get.

Oakland! Oakland! Oakland! There's so much good coffee in the bay area, but Oakland and Berkeley are a giant black hole. It's depressing.

(Mokka is one of the bright spots, but I agree that they are very hit-or-miss.)
