Like Dave says there are many alternatives to the expensive tampers. One tamper I have and really like is the Lava Tamp Convex Tamper ($21.95) as its quite comfortable in my hand and makes espresso easy on me.
Alternatively you can find many sources for flat bottom tampers as well. I have the stainless tamper from Sweet Maria's ($36) and its nice and heavy and does its job well too. I also had their rosewood handle tamper ($33) and it too was nice and did its job well. I prefered the solid stainless due to its weight, but they are both nice enough tampers.
Flat vs. Convex is a personal choice, I have both and I find the convex slightly more forgiving but thats just my experience. Many folks prefer flat.
