My wife and I are in Chicago for a 4 day getaway. I have always wanted try good espresso. All it seems that I can get in Alaska is nasty over extracted espresso exept for what I make at home. Well we flew in this morining and after a nap we walked to Intelligentsia on Randolph. All I can say is WOW! I started with a capp, that was so good I went back for a machiatto. Planning on hitting it every day we are here. I will keep working on my technique at home in hopes to consistenly get shots like thiers.

I got to Chicago at 7am on the 11th. Didnt see that they had tours until I was looking at there website that night. The only tour they had while I was there was the afternoon of the 11th. Maybe next time I go to Chicago. Also there barista training was on Wed. and I left Tues. night.

Well at least now there's an excuse to come back...lol. There are a few other excellent shops within the area if you take the el trains, such as Metropolis.
Funny - when I visit a coffeehouse that I think will be very good and want to make a comprehensive assessment that's exactly what I order but in reverse. I order and pay for a shot, a mach and a cap and ask them to serve the shot first so I can drink it while they're making the mach. The I go back to have the prepaid capp made when I'm done with the mach.
I do this at Cafe Grumpy in NYC and have also done this on each of my several visits to Intelly's LA cafe - excellent drinks in all three styles at both places. Also did this at LA Mill and Cafe Luxxe on my July visit to LA. Will be in San Francisco at the end of this month and planning a redux at the new Blue Bottle location and the newly opened Four Barrel - both of which opened after my last SF visit.

I like to start with the cappachino just incase the shots are not that good. That way I am protected a wee bit by the steamed milk. Every place that I have been to here in Alaska is pretty much nasty. I dont even try buy local espresso any more. I just make it at home.
