On my way through the East corridor of the Grand Central concourse this afternoon I saw a store being renovated with a big sign for Joe the Art of Coffee coming soon. This is wonderful news as my work neighborhood is a wasteland of Starbux and places with "espresso" and "macchiatto" and "daily roast" in their names that serve barely drinkable swill for espresso.

At last, a true espresso place near work and I can get to it entirely underground in case of snow or nuclear war. Hey Andre, are you still working in Midtown? The store is set to open in May.

Has anyone here purchased their beans?

Last time I checked they were using Barrington beans...an excellent blend in my opinion.

I hope they do a good job training their baristi...the ones I encountered on my visit to their 13th st. location were not too knowledgeable or enthusiastic...

Otherwise, with their brand new, top-notch equipment and quality beans, the odds of excellent espresso should be pretty good!

It opened today 6/11/08.

I had an espresso shot that was okay. It was complex with a syrupy body and a woody finish. I was suprised that it didn't have much crema.

I also bought some of there espresso blend to try at home. I am hoping that they are freshly roasted.

Joe's espresso blend is not Joe's espresso blend, it's Barrington Coffee Roasting Company's Barrington Gold espresso blend. That's the freshest source for that coffee.

Just got back from my second trip of the day to Joe in Grand Central. It is everything I hoped for and more. Midtown has been a vast wasteland for espresso and I have been wandering in a desert of Sbux since leaving my downtown firm nearly two years ago. <end metaphor>

At my first trip this morning I was met by (Joe's) family members, a fantastically friendly staff and a beautiful Marzocco. My espresso (to stay!) was served in an elegant but hefty ceramic cup. I assume (but I should have asked) that this was a triple ristretto and it was a good (not great) shot. Nice crema but a little woody as someone else here described it. Nevertheless, it was light years better than any other place I have tried in the neighborhood and I have tried them all. At my second trip I complimented the barista on her earlier shot and she explained to me that she was just back from vacation and it was her first day on a new machine. The second shot I got was phenomenal. Dark caramelly crema, like a little bitty tiramisu, and a wonderfully rich shot. I don't have the palate to describe it adequately but on the taste spectrum it seemed to fall between Black Cat and Leftist. Both of which I like but for different reasons. Needless to say, I will be there twice a day when I am not travelling.

BTW, I had previously bought some of the Barrington beans and found them hard to work with. Never quite got them dialed in. YMMV.

I would agree with he critiques of Joe's.  Last year I did a little espresso tour of Gimme, 9th St. Espresso and Joe the Art of Coffee at their Village location off Christopher St.  Of the three Joe was the weak link.  As already described, an espresso lacking in crema and with a touch of blonding.  Bitter and disappointing.   I hope they have raised their quality since and I hope their new store makes a better shot!

I finally had the chance to stop by yesterday. Briefly, it was excellent. Ironically, it was the same barista team that I had encountered in my visit to the 13th st. location that left me less than impressed, but they seem to have picked up the level of their game considerably. I had a macchiato and it was yummy. Rich, creamy, and a nice bold kick to it. I got a half-pound of beans as well, and pulled a good shot this morning at home. They seem overwhelmed by the high level of traffic - I don't think they were expecting such crowds...it was packed both times I walked past...but they were calm, effective, affable, and everyone seemed to leave happy. I'll definitely be stopping in whenever i'm in the neighborhood. As other posters have mentioned, there's nothing drinkable within walking distance. glad they're here!

Exactly.  While we can split hairs, Joe sure beats second wave bitter espresso any day.  I too am glad it's there and will check it out next month when I do my espresso tour of NYC!
