Hey all

I just had a friend machine the bottom off my Silvia PF and have started the fantastic journey of nakedness.  For a long time, I was able to pull 30 second shots every time with great results... but tonight I can't seem to pull a shot longer than 20 seconds (at the most).  The crema is still great, and there are no signs of channeling, but the pour seems really fast.  Is this normal, or should I start making some adjustments to my technique?

I just made my portafilter bottomless, and this is some of the first shots I pulled with it. I think the pour is a little fast, crema and taste are still fantastic. Thoughts?

Impressive channeling. I bet a finer grind and more attention to the dose/distribution would greatly improve the result.

dan's got it right. With those bottomless, imo, you have to fine the grind up a bit (or, ugh, dosing more spro), and if you're tamp isn't solid, it'll let you know.
To the first poster: You have to constantly adjust your grind setting. That should go without being said, man!
Second dude: Its hard for me to tell when you clicked the machine on (and I cringe at the fact that the puck is just sitting there cooking until its run), but from the first drops til the final, it was about 15 secs... even with a few "starter" seconds, after you click the machine on, you're looking at just under 20 (in all likely hood), which is way fast for most spro.

I've taken the advice and adjusted my grind (3 clicks, actually!) and that made a huge difference.  Being naked definitely highlights any error in dose/tamp/grind.  Later that evening, the channeling was actually spraying a couple feet onto the kitchen floor!  Don't worry about cooking the puck, Volcanolance, it was only there maybe 5 seconds before flipping the switch as I grabbed the camcorder and got in position.  I'm waiting for my video to upload to Google Video to show today's results... much better than last night!  I'll post the link once it's done.  It's a solid 30 second extraction with really nice tiger striping.

Getting better.. I would have stopped it around the 20 second mark given the blonding.  How did it taste?
