Subject: Not wasting as much milk -- any other tips?

Hey,

I really like a nice macchiato, but have always hated that I had to steam so much milk in my 12 ounce pitcher just to throw most of it out.  I'm lactose intolerant and use Soy Dream (about $2/quart) and it seemed expensive for a home operation.

So, I picked up a 5 oz. steam pitcher and now I can steam enough for a micchiato and only waste about 1 oz. of milk.   You have to be careful not to burn the milk with a small pitcher and I don't usually open the steam valve up all the way so I don't send milk all over the kitchen, but I'm happy with the results.

Any other tips by folks that have helped them streamline their espresso/drink making process?

Thanks,
-Fred

Where'd you get the 5 oz. pitcher?  I've been looking for a pitcher smaller than 12 oz. too, for the same reason.

Didn't see it mentioned......so here goes,

I use the small I.D. two hole tip from Chris Coffee on the S1. That plus putting the small stainless pitchers in the freezer and carefully cracking open the steam valve allows more time to intro air while not hitting the "burnt milk" point. I buy the small 5 oz. (?) stainless pitchers at kitchen supplies or Smart & Final wholesale groceries. I use one just for steam wand maintenance. I blow out the water prior to steaming and find the small stainless pitchers (actually creamers) to be perfect receivers.

EDIT NOTE:

You may have observed this for yourself, and I frankly have never asked a pro-barista... The "stainless creamers" that are available at retail kitchen stores like Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things are usually made from a thinner wall stainless than a commercial frothing pitcher. Thicker wall stainless pitchers appear to remain cooler longer and give a bit more time for frothing.

Hey Jen,

I think the 3 oz. would be too small.  The 5 oz. does work well, though.

Hope this helps (and you need some other stuff, these are cheap and the shipping would be about as much as the pitcher),
