Occasional coffeegeek.com poster Scott Rao has a new book out called The Professional Barista's Handbook. I got my copy today, and I think it will be a very worthy successor to David Schomer's "bible." Lots of practical stuff, and lots of interesting theory and theories. For about the price of that new tamper you were lusting after, this book will improve your espresso a lot more! :-)
(disclosure) I gave Scott some initial feedback on the espresso chapters, but I have no financial stake whatsoever in this book!

Great to hear. Esselon Cafe is about 6miles away and it's a nice place. Really like their espresso blend. Just met Richard their Roaster a couple weeks ago. Farmroast

Glad you posted this. Wouldn't have known otherwise.
Esselon Café is in my hometown! It's such a good place that my parents go there...and they only drink Sanka Instant Coffee. I swear to God...thank y'all for helping me break that cycle!

I've known Scott for a long time. I just finished reading the book and I was absolutely blown away. This book is for people who not only want great espresso, coffee, and tea, but more importantly for people who want to understand exactly what, why, and how it happens. The pictures of what proper espresso should look like made me want a shot immediately. The pictures in the 'milk' chapter were absolutely amazing. I've always known Scott to be a perfectionist. Even when his businesses were running at a level of efficiency that most would die for, all the while producing coffee that set a standard I've never seen equaled, he always was working for improvement. There is no doubt in my mind that he still is. The bottom line is that in this book he has created something important.

I placed an order for two books yesterday; Scott called me, and we talked a bit about the book and how it's worked out. He gives heaps of credit to CG, HB, Andy, lots of people for his "road", and I hope to do something on a future podcast about the book.
