It looks like you have the same setup as I do, so I'm curious about this technique. This is the first I've heard of mixing different grind settings (but I've only been doing this for a month :o) What grind setting are you using on your Rocky? I'm currently at 2 above true zero, which seems low to me.
Here's one for the road. A little quick on the trigger.
It’s easy and works great I do it without much thought now. I’m grinding around 5 or 6 above true zero right now(burrs touching) so if say 5 is a little too fine and 6 a little loose I grind some at 5 and some at 6 then it gets mixed together and “de-clumped” when I pour the coffee between two cups. I’ll sometimes grind only say 20% on one and 80% on the other depending on how close I want to be to 5 or 6 on the setting. After doing it so much I can peg the grind almost all the time it’s like a poor mans steeples adjustment!
Your burrs might be ready for replacement if you are that close to zero only about $40 and easy on the Rocky.
Absolutely fabulous results! Thanks for sharing. My technique is similar except I don't pour back and forth. Instead, I grind right into the PF using a cutoff yogurt container as a funnel (any flavor will do :-). And I'm more aggressive about stirring to declump and distribute the grounds. The handle on a dissecting needle makes it much easier to, uh, handle. Then I level with the needle handle (convenient straight edge) rather than my fingers. That might be the main difference between our techniques, and maybe I should go back to using my fingers - you and Jon get such beautiful pours!
Here's a collage from this morning. I used a convex tamper, probably over 30#, then a light polish.
I’m still struggling with micro-foam but am making some progress. I figure I’ll have this machine for a little while so I’ll get many chances to get it right.
I like your technique John, seems pretty close to what I do. I love to see the different ways people do things and I always learn something new when you see it done a different way. I’ve already gotten used to the needle trick and have been using it now every time.

Cool guys! Thanks for posting your techniques...
Lately I have been playing with keeping things simple. I underdose slightly, measuring whole beans by volume. Then grind, brush, click/flick to get all the coffee into the basket (I leave the PF in the machine as I fill my basket)
For distribution I tap and rotate the basket constantly as I fill. Towards the end, I rap it gently on the counter to settle (this is where I can adjust the distribution - if it's not flat)
Then one straight down tamp and I'm ready to go.
It's been working well for me. My shots have been a little shorter (maybe 1.25 to 1.75 oz)... ...but that just means I can have an extra one or two....

Thanks for sharing this idea, it works great! I have been trying to nail down a more consistant routine, of all the methods of distribution I have tried this has given me by far the most consistant results.
