I live in New York City and I have been to all of the best coffee bars here. This doesn't mean much in terms of getting a good cup of coffee. With the internet, these days anyone can get great coffee beans shipped anywhere. I have tried some of the best, top rated coffee beans in the world. I use a press pot for my coffee. With this, by far, my favorite coffee beans are from Antica Tostatura Triestina. It is rich, strong, smooth, and not bitter. I also know that it will not win any awards here or anywhere else. I don't care. It is simply the best cup of coffee I've ever had.
David, I fear you may be missing out on the good stuff in NYC. In the last couple of years, some really amazing spots have opened up. Have you tried any places from this list, for example?

I have found Illys in local espresso shops. I live in Seattle area and we have a shop called Vivace, which roasts similare to illy. Vivace is better because it is fresh roasted. Better crema - more flavor.
Roasting one's own beans is irrelevant. Most people here do NOT roast their own coffee and yet, they wouldn't touch this stuff.
Illy is available in most upscale supermarket chains and kitchen supply stores. And there are many cafés that use Illy. Lavazza is also available in some supermarkets. I have rarely seen Segafreddo, except in airports or the food courts of large shopping mall. None of these locations are known for their great coffee.
