Hello, since it`s quite a distance from Italy to North America it would be interesting for me which Italian espresso brands actually appear in your shops? Lavazza, Segafredo, Illy for sure - but what about other brands.
And, yes I know that a lot of you roast their own coffee and wouldn´t even think about buying this stale stuff ;-)

I haven't ever seen Illy or Segafredo used at any coffeehouses, although Illy is available at many retailers. I have a couple of customers that used to use lavazza at their coffee shops and it is relatively prevelent in some of the upscale restaurants in my area.

Thanks for your reply Miguel. I actually meant retail. Namely what do you find in supermarkets, grocers or delicatessen stores. My fault not to make that point clear.

I've seen Illy and Lavazza in gourmet shops and delis. Haven't seen Segafredo, though there is a Segafredo cafe in downtown San Francisco. I believe I've also seen Danesi.

I've actually never seen Segafredo but Lavazza and Illy are common. Others that I have seen are Ottolina (sp?), Saquella, Caffe Mauro... and a whole bunch of others that I can't quite remember the names of. If you go to Italian markets, you can find a variety of coffee from the motherland.

In the whole area of 5-6 or so connecting towns I live in, there is only one supermarket I found, namely Foodtown, that sells Lavazza, can- or vacuuum-packed pre-ground. No beans.
The rest of the supermarkets do not sell unground espresso roasts as "espresso" at all; you could find "French" roast and it would be the only one "espresso-like". The ground espresso will be something cheap, the most expensive from them being Cafe Bustelo or such.
So I survive buying on-line, and am looking for a local roaster and seem to find one. The one, I think (not many of them here). As soon as I put last scoop of my one kilo of Lavazza through my MM, I am gonna pay them a visit.

I have found Caffe Tazza d'Oro as pre-ground espresso in Chicago supermarkets, but just the ones mentioned above (illy, segafredo, lavazza) here in Des Moines. This was before I bought a grinder, though, and I haven't really been looking since then. It's much better to roast your own!
