I would like to try the Black Cat and other products from Intelligentsia.

When shipped to Canada would I be charged Customs and Duty?

Is there a better choice to be able to order these items?

I don't know about customs and duty, but this place in Kelowna B.C. sells Black Cat online. I've never ordered from them, so you might want to call first...to find out how fresh the beans are when shipped to you. But they're close to where you live and customs/duty won't be a factor.

BigBadger, did Zcafe get back to you about the Blackcat beans? And how fresh they are if ordering from them, not intelligentsia?

I actually never did buy them from ZCafe. I talked to the fellow there and he explained that they order regularly from Intelligentsia and that my order would be sent immediately once they received it. So I have no doubt that the product would have been fresh. I just didn't want to buy 3# at a time. I found a local Coffee shop here that sold me a much smaller amount of bean so I could try it. Good, but we like the Espresso blend from Transcend better.

Actually, here was his email reply if that helps you -

--------------------------------------------
Black Cat coffee supplied to us on "Fresh to order" basis, which means we collect weekly orders and submit to roast in Los Angeles, California. Roasting to Canada is done on Mondays and cross the border by Thursday-Friday to our BC facility.
From BC we ship to you via ground shipping service (free). If you are interested we can check transit time to your location, we just need your address. The bags can be frozen

Kind Rgds,

John

Thanks BigBadger. I found a cafe in Toronto that carries Black Cat and gets orders from Intelligentsia twice a week. Haven't been there yet, but plan to go in the coming weeks. Also heard good things about Transcend, and will order from them soon. I'm currently getting through some People's Daily Espress, People's Liberation Espresso, and Nyet-Nyet Decaf Espresso beans from Social Coffee & Tea Co. in the Toronto area. So far, so good -- and they ship nationwide.

I bought my Black Cat beans from Manic Coffee, a cafe in Toronto. When I purchased them, they were 3 days post-roast (roast date was on the bag). Apparently they get large shipments from Intelligentsia twice a week by courier, but not sure of the shipping details. Anyway, I could tell the beans were definitely fresh when I pulled a shot that night. It tasted great.

Yes, roasted coffee orders are shipped out by UPS 2nd Day Air.

Black Cat etc are so fresh that it's best to wait at least 4 days post roast! "Re: Toronto & Southern Ontario Intelligentsia Group Buy" {:-D
