I know, here I am roasting weekly with my SC/GG for 12 years now, moved up
to a Vetrano, recently modified my Mazzer Mini to doserless.

Very rarely I feel the need for an evening espresso, i have done it and the result
were terrible, sleepless night with zombie behavior at work nxt day.

The following question is obviously sacrilegious, i would not even dare ask it on
home-barista.

What brand apart from Illy decaf espresso ground would you suggest for decaf
for someone like me? I mean preground that will pull a tad above the 1/2-axx sort
of "espresso" that preground stored coffee will usually provide.

Thank you!

yeah, pretty much what you said to begin with...though I'd say rather than it being sacrilige, you just simply can't make good espresso with preground.

why don't you...

1) single dose your mini, so that it's available when you want to have decaf.  You could roast some decaf beans and then freeze them in small bags (each with a single dose),
or,
2) get a hand mill for decaf, such as one of the Harios,
or,
3) if you are absolutely dead set on using preground for this, roast your own and pregrind it?  Of course, then you'll have no one to blame but yourself :)

.

Thanks, I used to have a spice bottle hopper in the past, that would have been easy.

I agree, i might just spring for a Zazzie handie for decaf.

I too must say that since you are used to GOOD espresso, drinking eXpresso might not sit so well. An inexpensive hand grinder and quality beans can answer the occasional need for a decaf shot or two.
YMMV :D
