I've been buying from a local roaster for nearly two years now and I've been satisfied enough to keep going back. My last pound has been awful, best description is burnt licorice. Toss it and try again or bring back what's left and complain? I know my answer, but I'd like to hear some of your stories when you receive a bad batch.

+1, if your a regular customer, you should take it back and ask what happened. They may have already received other feedback on that batch and may take care of it on the spot.

If I was in your place, of course I will return it to them. For two years, this is the first time to happen so there’s something wrong. Just think that you always pay similar with before expecting to receive quality and great beans. For sure, you are already considered as valued customer to them so they will surely understand if you bring it back.

Okay, mine were not "bad" beans persay, but years of buying regularly from a local roaster; and all the sudden could not dial in a fine enough grind for my life. I have a Vario, and it was always at the S or T on the micro. Then over 2-3 months, same beans, I had the micro at the very finest and even had to put the macro up to 1 instead of 2. Wasted almost the whole pound. Called the roaster. He told me that they changed the blend over the last 2-3 months (when I noticed the problem) from Brazilian/Costa Rican to Brazilian/Guatamalen. They are changing it back to the Brazilian/Costa Rican in the next couple weeks. Not saying that is the same as having burnt tasting espresso, but just as bad--cuz I couldn't grind it fine enough making it undrinkable.

I'd return it. I've had cases where beans are underroasted to the point that they won't go through my grinder- took it in, got new coffee. If it's bad flavor, I'd take it in. What's the worst that could happen?
