This lot was purchased through the Ethiopia Community Exchange from a private washing station in the Koke Sub-Region near Yirga Cheffe. It was the best lot Phil tasted on the hundreds he cupped on his last trip to Ethiopia in March 2012. It's a classic Yirga Cheffe with notes of Black Tea, brown sugar and peach. ------------------
Has anyone else tried this amazing blend yet? If so, do you know of any other blends which taste like this one? The reason why I ask is that they are discontinuing this blend, at least to the best of my knowledge.. It's a shame because it really has an amazing taste. I really don't know how to ask for this kind of coffee.. Is it just called "Yirga Cheffe"?
I'm relatively new to coffee blends... I didn't realize coffee could taste like this..

i've never tried that but this doesnt sound like a blend. typically when i see the word blend, it's a combination of different beans the roaster combines.
You may be thinking "blend" because of the "mixed heirloom varieties" portion of the description. This likely just means that a bunch of different farmers in the region brought their cherries to a common washing station and then they were "mixed" there. As far as i know, this is still considered a single origin.

i'm on a subscription from Phil and Sebastians and the last two months have had the Koke. I agree.... excellent coffee. What you are discovering is the coffee from the Yirga Cheffe growing region in Ethiopia which has some very strong characteristics. I was recently in Portland and Coava coffee had an excellent Yirga Cheffee that they sent me home with as did Ristretto coffee. not sure if they mail order but they were seriously excellent!!
And Qualin, I see that you are in Calgary. I'm in Golden and come to Calgary every now and then. we should do coffee sometime...

Hey Qualin, I just received my latest instalment from P and S. sure enough the Koke is gone. However, there is a new ethiopian that is now sitting in my freezer. What I wanted to bring your attention to however, is the Costa Rican espresso from the Calderon-Castillo family. absolutely spectacular so far and I am just approaching the fruit as I dial it in.
OK, I'll certainly keep that in mind. I wonder what I should expect from a "Seasonal" point of view.. Like how often I should expect to see this coffee show up. How many months does it take to grow a full crop of coffee like this Koke? (Or the stuff you are talking about above?)
As well, did the Barista tell you what parameters they're working with?
