Hi Guys, Id like to hear your thoughts and comments on this...
I recently bought some fresh roasted beans from a well known commercial roaster that I wont name out of respect and got them shipped home,
It was 1kg of pre-packaged espresso beans with the usual one way valve, before opening the bag seemed inflated a bit but not too much to blowing up... Nothing to worry I thought,
Now I know that fresh roasted beans will release some CO2(therefor the need of a one way valve, to let the pour beans breathe!!!) And I also know that some roaster will use nitrogen gas in the bags to help to keep those babies fresh...
That said, when I opened the bag with excitement, I discovered that the smell was a mix of fresh coffee and weird gas smell !!?? So, I went ahead and did my usual thing and brewed an espresso...
During the extraction everything seemed normal...BUT It tasted like sour and citrus and bitter and all that not so good!
There are far too many factors at play here to blame taste on gas. You'd need to rule out a lot of other factors first. So: - Grams of coffee used - Extraction temp - Extraction time - Warmup time - Water taste (cold) - Water taste (warm, from the group) - And more...
Start with the first items here, let's see if we can't figure this out. In the meantime, bump up your temperature a bit more and see if that doesn't curb the sourness a bit.
The same variables for one blend may do terrible things with another. Have you used this particular blend before? And, no worries about actually saying what the coffee was - it may do more help than harm, either for you, or for the roaster. Anyone that cares about their products and customers will see complaints as opportunities to improve, not slights against them.
Nope not at all, Id like to understand what is going on!!
I cant really provide any other info other than brew pressure was around 9.5 bars, temp was about 198 degrees, I must be getting 20 ounces for 30secs... I used the usual 18 grams of beans, Machine had been on for about 1 hr(same as usual) water taste was room temp in the tank, and like I said 198 when brewed, I dont know what else to state... thanks!
Im not sure about the roast date... on the bag it has some kind gibberish code and numbers , I think its a best before date... damn, that might explain it! what could the degas issue or caused by??if the roast date was a day ago or something?
