Lately I've been exploring a bit. One benefit of living in a large city is that there are a few local roasters, and a couple of them are micro-roasters. Brown Coffee Co. is on my way to work (OK, it's a mile out of my way) so I've been working through their offerings. For the last few days, we've been drinking their espresso roast (note: not overdark, not oily) of the Edlina Microlot from Finca Vista Hermosa (Guatemala). Sayeth the website: "Clean, bright and complex, a delicious espresso with notes of black cherry, papaya and sweet lemon zest that rounds out as it cools."

OK, I'm not getting all of that. Yes, there's some dark fruit and citrus; and I keep getting hints of chocolate. But it seems sensitive to procedure; one shot will be dominated by the brightness and citrus, the next more balanced. (Bear in mind how new I am to all this.)

I stopped there yesterday and they didn't have any more of that particular roast available. But they'd just gotten in two new coffees; one from Rwanda, one from Burundi. Like I said, we've been exploring; so after a couple more shots of the Edlina Microlot, I'll go with the Burundi.

The bags I got were roasted two days ago. It's great to be able to get fresh-roasted coffee without paying shipping costs that amount to 1/3 of the total. (We had some Sweet Tooth from Ritual that was good, but the shipping was so expensive. I recognize the idea is to get the stuff here from the roaster as quickly as possible, so "free" seven-day shipping isn't going to cut it. Still.)

Other `local' favorites: Cuvee Coffee's Spicewood 71 blend; their Reserva espresso; Mildfire Coffee's Brasil and Burundi offerings. Now that I think about it, we've liked almost all of the freshly-roasted specialty coffees we've been able to get hold of. The times I've allowed myself to run out and fallen back on supermarket bagged beans (even ones that suggested they'd been recently roasted) have been the times we've been disappointed in our coffee -- those, and the home roast I did in a popcorn popper. I know people get good results from those, but the coffee I roasted turned out ashy and flat, even when I pulled a shot that was so soon post-roast I could taste effervescence in the shot (CO2). (It didn't get better 3-4 days post-roast.) Obviously more to learn on that front.

I've recently been enjoying a 70% Sumatra/30% Columbian blend from Parisi.  It's one of those Roaster's Picks things like what Counter Culture sometimes does.  I know that the composition sounds odd but I'm liking it pretty well.

Profile: Semi-sweet chocolate, some citrusy orange, berries.  Moderately long finish with the chocolate finishing stronger than it starts.  Semi-moist (as opposed to dry/powdery).  The downside is that it is a thinner-bodied cup which is kind of a bummer as I like a thicker, more syrupy body.  Likes a hotter extraction. Has held up well (deep freeze in 1/2 lb increments) over the last 2 weeks.

As a follow up to the previous post, I HATE HATE HATE a finicky blend.  I put up with one for 4 pounds and it sucked.  It was my blend/fault so I'm not blaming anybody, but man, one shot was like X and the other was like Y.   Like a bi-polar chick: when its fun its really fun, when its not,  it really goes off the rails.

I've been able to dial the current blend in and keep it there which is nice as our weather has been erratic.

I liked the micro lot you are talking about, I drank mainly in short milk drinks got a real nice orange sort of taste from it. However, my favorite from Brown has been the non-espresso roast version of the origin that salted caramel descriptor is no joke.

I really like Vivace Dolce, which is what I'm currently using. Have tried and liked Black Cat and Cafe Vita as well, and am looking for others.

I'm actually looking for a less bitter blend than the one I'm actually using (bought at a grocery store - to forget). Do Red Bird espresso blend fits a more creamy / dark chocolate profile ?

It is supposed to be very forgiving and they use the words "snickers bar" a lot when talking about it.

Hey noobie I was looking at Sweet Maria's website and saw the Liquid Amber and was wondering the price is that for a pound or just 12 oz because I didn't see anywhere were they show the amount. Anyway I going downstairs and pull me a double of Red Bird.
