Posted Mon Nov 21, 2011, 5:36am Subject: Coffee Emergency no longer doing mail order
I went to their site and found a note that they have bought a new roasting company with a lot of local business leaving them, at least for a while, with no time for mail order. I am bummed. Before settling on them, I had tried a local roaster who provided me with a burnt oily mess, and Pete's which never seemed to be fresh. Jason's products were in my hands two days after roasting and were always yummy.
Of course that was 4-5 years ago, and things change, so I am hoping that someone can point me to a mail order roaster to replace Coffee Emergency with all of the quality and service I got from Jason.
edit: I just noticed some chatter about Redbird and maybe others .. I will read and maybe come up with a substitute. I would still appreciate some recommendations.
What? Intelligentsia is bargain bin pricing next to Ritual! :P (Kidding aside, though, I agree, Intelligentsia is absurdly overpriced for what they are.) Some people love Black Cat...I'm not a huge fan of it, and am continually amazed at the pricing.
I've never had Coffee Emergency (though their medical themed coffee is kind of a fun schtick.) But I can vouch for Counter Culture, Metropolis, Klatch, Fresco, Paradise, Redbird, Ritual (for when expensive just isn't costly enough.) That's pretty much my "A-list" of roasters that I always buy from, some more than others, based on a combination of bean, shipping time/reliability, packaging, pricing etc. Depending on how big the "emergency", some are more dependable time-wise. Fresco and Paradise are basically 1-man operations (I'm sure there's more staff than that, but there's one central person who wears as many hats as possible.) As a result their shipping schedules are chaotic. The day you think it will ship isn't always the day it will ship, etc....so I've learned to buy well in advance when buying from those two (Aaron at Paradise and Tony at Fresco are fantastic folks to work with....but they can't be everywhere at once, and sometimes the ship date reflects that.) Jeff at Redbird is also largely a one man show, but somehow I don't think his shipping schedules are as chaotic...probably because he doesn't offer as huge a variety of beans the other two do, so it's done in less discreet roasting sessions. CCC, Metropolis, Klatch, and Ritual ship out like clockwork. All the above have excellent beans depending on your tastes.
