Hey all,
Are thereany recommendations on a good way to prepare decaf espresso? I have to avoid cafeine for a while and was looking at trying some single origin decaf espresso or blends. So far, my luck has been OK, nothing great. Obviously I am getting almost no crema as is the case with decaf anyway.
Sorry to hear that you have to go decaf. I can't imagine... the idea of cutting back is scary enough.
Anyhow, we've had good luck with an Organic Decaf Peru - Swiss Water Process as a single origin decaf espresso. In the realm of Meth-Chloride process, try 70% Decaf Guatemala roasted light with 30% Decaf Sumatra roasted to a light city. Or you could just drop us a line and order some.
Our website doesn't have a large selection presently (working on an overhaul,) but feel free to contact us directly if you're interested, or just want to pick our brains.
I too must split my coffee intake between caf and decaf. I have had good luck with the Decaf offerings from Counter Culture. In fact, I am sipping on an espresso made with their Decaf Peruvian now. I get good crema as well.
Look for Swiss Waters Cascadia blend at your local roaster. While they don't specify origins it is a quadra-sealed coffee and makes a nice well ballenced espresso. With water processed decaf I think freshness is even more of an issue because the beans seem to dry out.
There is less creama in decaf, but some beans produce less than others. My favorites, when Sweetmarias has them, are komodo blend, sulawesi, and sumatra. Worse case you could try a bag of Starbuck's Komodo blend.
Just remember to stop the shot when the color changes. Shot sizes are smaller for decaf if stopped properly.

I tried the komodo blend from Coffee WholeSalers and it was very good. One of the BEST decafs I have ever had was La Florida I picked up on The Green Coffee Club site. Wish I could find more.
Anyway, I am going to be trying some various organic blends from Coffee Whole Salers - Cafe Bonito.
