Anybody have success pulling PTS Bella Vita. I ordered a pack the other day and i'm looking forward to trying it. I loved Black Cat from Intel. but I wanted to try something else. Anyone have a good starting point with this blend on a Rancilio S/R. I hate to waste new beans when attempting to dial in on dose/grind/tamp.

Also, anyone know of any economical espresso blends out there? Seems i'm paying w/ shipping $20/lb for all my beans so far. I may have to bite the bullet and get a home roaster if I continue at this rate.

Bella Vita is a great espresso blend, very vibrant and "present", it's a different animal than Black Cat in its taste profile.

I've had it pulled for me by the second best barista in the US (Pete Licata), as well as tried it on my own on several occasions.

Pull it as a 16-18g double (about 1.5-2.0oz brewed), about the middle of the deadband on the Silvia (right in the middle of the boiler OFF state, or after you flush about 3 seconds of water from the machine after the boiler light turns off). Start there, then experiment.

Interesting. I have yet to delve into different temp surfing techniques for different blends. I typically empty some hot water out of the steam valve until the boiler light turns on. Then I count to 40 or 50 seconds (or when the light turns off) I immediately hit the brew button. I will try your method to see if I notice any difference.

You barely had an impression from the shower screen bolt. I seem to always have a small whole in the center from the bolt. Am I dosing too much? I've heard you should be able to fit a penny or a nickel between that bolt and the grind when you lock in the portafilter. Is this correct?

Man that grinder doses nicely into the portafilter. I get tons of static from my Rocky doserless even thought I live in a hot humid environment.

I've been getting delicious doubles dosing anywhere from 15-18g of BV & using a 94C brew temp on my Vivaldi.

Finally was able to dial in on this blend over the weekend. I'm enjoying it more in milk than drinking straight. I do like Black Cat better.

Try some different temp ranges as the straight shots I'm getting are every bit as good as the B/C.
