Hello everybody,

My first post here.

I've been using 6 days old Ethiopia Shakisso farm beans, I grind them myself just before brew.
When having 17-22g coffee dose I don't get bloom in my Kalita wave 185 at all.
When I do 30-40g coffee I do get bloom.
Grind for second dose is coarser, 'cause I have more coffee.

Is the problem in grind size or depth of the coffee bed or something else?

Thanks.
Ivan

I know this is a dumb question, but you're coffee has a roast date right? Always make sure to use fresh coffee even though you stated it's sx days old. Are you using the correct grind particle size for your brew method? And is the water hot enough? When beginning to brew, pour just alittle water in to soak the coffee bed, and let sit for 30-40 seconds normally.

Yeah it has a roast date stamped on.
I think it should have to be in relation with grind size.
My first pour is double the coffe weight cca 35g of water, awaiting the bloom.
But how small grind size should be with 17g dose in kalita 185.
17g of coffee makes rather small bed in kalita 185.
Water temp is around 94 degrees of celsius.

I experience the same issue in my Chemex.  I believe a puffy bloom is caused by the release of CO2.  My theory is the finer grind I use for the smaller coffee quantity releases more of the CO2 during the grinding process so, less bloom.
