It's easy when your driving. You don't have to worry about TSA or baggage handlers breaking anything (or freaking out at the beans [happened to my daughter]) or putting stuff through to carry on and being quizzed about why you need to bring something to boil water.
What do you guys do when you are flying, changing planes with not to long layover? Do you check it and pray? Carry on parts and check other parts?
I've had a couple of small things broken, one fixable, one replaceable at the time. So trying to figure it out. Going to Boston so figure will go George Howell's and buy beans there but what about the other parts?
Oh, what I take when I drive: Hario mini mill Bodum french press mug (I love the slogan on it, cause it gets such attention too!) Bodum electric kettle
I do coffee not spro so it works great and the mill container filled is just right for the french press mug.

Here's my go-to travel setup whether driving or flying:
Able brewing filter (standard)
As for boiling water, I usually make do with what I have at my destination. Most hotels have electric kettles. All of this is pretty compact, and it would fit rather easily in a carry on I may switch to a Porlex grinder which fits within the Aeropress plunger.

Same here. I've traveled several times with coffee gear. I bring all of it in my carry-on. If they search it, I can explain it. If they search a checked bag, then they can confiscate it...and, as you said, the "throwers" can break it.
I bring: OE Lido, Aeropress, small scale, small rubber prep cup (for weighing beans), beans in a Ziploc and/or canning jar(s), thermometer, pliers (for taking the Lido handle off prior to return trip), raw sugar cubes.
Just got back from 5 days in Cambridge last Sunday. The Houston airport looked cross-eyed at my pliers, but didn't say anything. Boston Logan didn't bat an eye at anything I had, and I cruised right on through. In June, we went to Barbados, and I was a little worried they might think I was trying to cover up drugs with the coffee, but I didn't have any issues at all in either direction.
As above, I use the hotel coffee maker to heat water. I typically find the water to be around 190-200F, have gotten as low as 175, but this last trip it was 200 on the nose.
