Subject: Problem with my new Gaggia Classic

Hi everyone,

I just bought a second hand Gaggia classic which is supposed to be working properly, but I'm experiencing a problem with the steam pipe.
I can't get it to work at all, and when I take off the plastic turning knob I notice that the steel handle underneath doensn't turn either way (so I've just been turning the plastic knob that covers it). Am I doing something wrong, should  I try to release the handle with tongs, or is there another problem that needs to be fixed? Thanx in advance for helping me out!

Pull the plastic knob off;  just pull it out firmly.  You will be able to see if the moon-shaped place where it is supposed to grab onto the steam valve has gotten cracked or stripped.  There is no reason you can't use anything you can find to turn that steam valve to open it (lefty loosey).  Then if you want to replace the steam knob itself you can source one either at PartsGuru or at Cerini Coffee.  They aren't as cheap as you might want, but they are available.

Similar to Susan, you may want to look at the part diagram

Part 10 the knob key could be missing.  That would allow the handle to spin and not move the shaft.

If not, it may be very tight and as Susan noted, left counter clockwise is loose.

Whoa, thanks Fred.  That "knob key" completely surprised me.  The knobs I have pulled off have only had those plastic moon-shaped depressions that are supposed to hold onto the shape of the valve itself.  And those are easily stripped.   More information for me...More is better :-))))
