Subject: French press coffee grounds to water ratio
 

Hey all, just got a 8 cup French Press yesterday, brand is Bonjour.

I'm a little unsure about the grounds to water ratio. I've read 2 tbsp of grounds for every 6 oz of water. I used this and it worked great. However, when I used it, to be safe I used doubled the servings so I used 4 tbsp of grounds and 12 oz of water. It produces about 8-10 oz of coffee in the french press, does that sound about right? Considering 1 cup of coffee is 4 oz right? Just want to make sure I got my ratios right.

Aside from that, wonderful. I can finally make good coffee at home. I started with a $20 Mr. Coffee maker and it always made this acidic/bad aftertaste coffee, even grinding my own beans before brew. Then I considered a Keurig beacuse of how fast it is but read some critical reviews that pushed me away from it. Then I read about the French Press, bought it, love it. I'm using Eight O' Clock Coffee right now, and would like to try something else in the future. How's Folgers?

I see. I'll avoid folger's. My favorite are the non-acidic ones.

I get them before I press but afterwards (4 minutes brew time) I don't have 'em. I'm probably being very picky but was just curious.

We used to use a French press but I had read that the caffeine content was significantly higher than a drip version using the same coffee; the longer the coffee sits in the water the more caffeine molecules it picks up. Believe it or not, espresso is the least caffeinated due to the fact the caffeine molecules are not as much attracted to steam as they are to water. Go figure.
I hope the unrest has settled down, we are not getting as much news coverage these days.

I personally use 16/1 ratio for my press. It's gotta be true because 1 8 oz cup of Robusta press and I'm shaking out of my boots.  I have to have 3 triple's before I start shaking. lol

I'm doing the 50 oz Bodum every morning. Comes out to about 40 oz drinkable coffee. Don't know how much I use (I measure using my hand and the grinder cup), but I learned when I first started that the FP requires more coffee than I thought.
