Subject: Gaggia Classic won't push water through the portafilter?

Hello,

I've had a Gaggia Classic for a little over a year and the machine has run great. I use it in conjunction with a Iberital grinder that I bought from Happy Donkey and it's been producing some good espresso. However...

A couple of days ago a went to brew a shot and the machine couldn't 'push' the water through the coffee in the portafilter, and I've been having the issue ever since. I'm certain it's not the coffee as I've tried everything, including reducing the dose, making the granules coarser and not tamping so hard, but nothing's working. The machine doesn't seem to have to pressure to push the water through the coffee.

I've given the machine a good backflushing with Urnex Full Circle, but it hasn't made an ounce of difference. The only thing I haven't done is a descale, but I don't live in an overly hard water area, and I've almost always used bottled water or britta filtered water.

Anyone know what the issue is or had the same problem? All help would be much appreciated as I'm struggling without my morning latte!

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CoffeeGeek!

Is the flow normal when you pull an empty shot? Otherwise descaling seems like a good idea.

Yeah, the water flows perfectly fine when there's no portafilter attached.

Any other suggestions? I'm starting to think I'm going to need to get it looked at...

So, just to be clear, when the portafilter is off you are getting 2 oz of water in 30 seconds through the group?

Minor point, but with the PF off there is not much back pressure and flow is about 10 ml/sec at no back pressure.  If you open the wand and use no PF and collect the flow from both for 10 - 15 seconds, you should approach 10 ml/sec.  That shows that the volume output is ok, but not necessarily against pressure.

If flow is good, then try a half dose of usual and see if that really obstructs flow.  If so, then you may need to measure pressure.  Search OPV and pressure and you will find a variety of ways to measure pressure by a gauge to the PF.  A start

I do not know your skills, but the Classic is fairly easy and straight forward to work on.  You can replace the pump for a lot less than "getting it looked at."

Not a minor point at all....
My mistake.
Sorry.
WDT (water debit test) should give you 100 ml of water in about 15 seconds....

as Fred so politely pointed out to me.

Sheesh.
