Being fairly new to grinding and brewing quality coffee, I am wondering what type of water is best for brewing coffee. I will assume that unfiltered tap water is not the best choice because of minerals and chlorine. I again am making an assumption but I expect that distilled/purified water, or purified spring water are preferred. Is there any difference in the preferred type of water between drip brewing and making expresso?
What do you use?

Tim, Distilled water is just looking for something to dissolve and I would not use it. I use filtered water or spring water if filtered is not available. I work in a lot of places that use Demineralized water (The next step after distilled), some guys in one shop were making coffee from demin water and after about a month, the enamal on their teeth started to disolve.

Here is a snippet from a newsletter I received from 1st-line regarding water type (mainly for espresso):
Most customers do want to use distilled or reverse osmosis water in their machine. This is alright for single boiler machines, but it is not good for heat exchanger (HX) machines. The reason is that these HX machines need some mineral content to operate properly. There is electrical current (between 5 and 24 volts) that runs within the water, and when it can not flow through, in most HX machines, it will shut the machine off or it will overfill the boiler (causing leakage).
I have been using softened reverse osmosis water for some time now, but after reading this, I am going to rethink my water preference.
Whether we are talking drip or epsresso, hard water is an enemy of any machine. At the very least, do not use hard water. There is a good article on decalcifying, and gives some good info on water hardness:

After more research I've come to the conclusion that different coffee delivery processes have different ideal water conditions, to produce the best results. Can anyone comment to whether they are using different water treatments for pressed beans VS drip service?
