Dear all,

I recently acquired a Bodum 3-cup Press, and a Hario Mini-mill.

Now, I'm rather confused about the definitions of cups.

For one cup (long black quantity, not espresso), how many scoops of beans of the supplied Bodum spoon (7g) do I need?

Thank you.

First - welcome to coffeegeek!

Well, traditionally a "cup" is supposed to be 6 fluid oz (around 170g hot, 177g cold), but this may not exactly be the case for the Bodum lineup.

For example, my Bodum Shin Bistro is "8-cup", but that would imply a capacity of about 1300g brew water.  In truth, at full capacity it really only can handle about 900grams of brew water with a decent brew ratio.

I looked at the little 3-cup a while ago, and expect it might make a 300g-400g mug of coffee.

I think in mass - grams of brew water and grams of coffee.  For a FP, a great starting point is 16g of brew water per gram of coffee.

The supplied Bodum scoop is a volumetric measurement and will be very inaccurate - you may get 5g or you may get 10g of coffee per "scoop".

On the Hario Mini Mill, try about 12 "declicks" from tight.

So, I'd go with 400g of water and 25g of coffee as a starting point, if your device can handle it.  It's up to you to convert to fluid oz at high temperatures and scoops of coffee. This will produce about 1 decent "mug" of coffee - approximately between the size of a Starbucks tall and Starbucks short.

In the end, go with what tastes right!
