We have resorted to metrics. Forget this American Standard crap!
Now we just measure in grams. Why? Because 1g = 1ml. Water, coffee, whatever. Now, granted, I know that this is not technically true, but in the instance of measuring water and coffee, it works.

By the way, an imperial fl. oz. is 28.4 ml, not 29.57 ml as in a US fl. oz. Both are quite close to 10 barn-megaparsecs (a unit of a really long and narrow volume) though.
Also, one pint is 20 fl. oz = 568ml. Anything else is the wrong amount of beer. ;)
Ok - i hate AVOIRDUPOIS. That should be no contest: it's based on the POUND, one sixteenth of which is defined as an OUNCE.
One pound avoirdupois = 453.59237 grams. One sixteenth of that is 28.3495grams. Or you can go to www.google.com and put in "convert ounce gram" to get 1 oz = 28.3495g.
So the big problem comes from the issue of the measurement of volume. A cubic centimeter is a ml. Period. 1000ml, or .1m^3 is a LITER. Period.
An Imperial Fluid Oz is 28.413ml, which isn't an oz of water except at around 22°C (where 28.413ml of distilled water will actually weigh 28.3495g). To make matters worse, suddenly an Imperial GALLON is defined at the volume occupied by 10 avoirdupois pounds of distilled water, at 30 inches of mercury barometric pressure, at 62°F.
I mean, REALLY? Because 1 ATMOSPHERE is actually 29.92 inches of mercury... but NOoooo, they gotta pick 30"Hg.

Unfortunately, because of this mishmash, an Imperial Gallon which is supposed to work out to 4546.09 milliliters (4.54609 l), does NOT hold that MASS of water, except at 4°C.
So an Imperial Pint is 16 Imperial fluid oz, right?
Not by a long shot. It's actually 20 fluid oz!
And a US pint (loosely based on English/Early Imperial measurement systems) is 16 US fluid oz (which is different than an Imperial fluid oz).
Shoot me in the face, this stuff is so f'd up that I only use gallons and half gallons because it's buried in our culture.
I was trying to figure out all of this stuff because Lockhart's studies were done in Oz(av.) of extraction of dissolved solids per (US) Gallon of coffee. Try figuring out standard units (let alone a percentage) with that! Let's start out with the question of what temperature were the gallons defined?

It's a lot more fun though - unless you crash a Mars orbiter that is, and your Canadian neighbours can always taunt about how much more efficient their cars are.....
So our French cousins had it right all along - but wait - the kilogram is about to be re-defined ! - and now Chrome is telling me I can't spell "neighbour" for some reason 'cos someone called Webster seems to have decided to change it.

Unless we are making something for an experiment, a pint is a pound... Or close enough not to make a difference other than to the.... Persons who have been without a bowel movement for an extended period of time.

Agreed it's only so much navel gazing. Misses the point though that this is dependant on the pint in question. It's not universal and it's open to misinterpretation.
Believe me a pint of Heineken in the US is a sad disappointment compared to a pint of Heineken in the UK and we're not talking flavour here, just four ounces or so.
