Hello all, newbie here with a Gaggia Classic and MDF grinder. I've had the set up for a little over two months. Learning alot from this wonderful site. Recently took delivery of 1lb of Yirgacheffe from a roaster online; roasted on 7/26/2012. My question, no matter the setting on the grinder, drip or espresso, I get chaff mixed in with the grounds. Is this normal? I assume that's what the light tan flakes are within the grounds. I'm not very knowledgeable about roasting, however none of my other beans do this. When I look at the Yirg beans before grinding, they look good, not oily, but a good portion of them have a light tan color in the crack. I haven't contacted the roaster yet. I will email them though. Anyone that can enlighten me would be most helpful. thanks.... Pete

Pete:
From my experience, the bits of chaff are normal for light roasted coffees. I see it on mine all the time. It sounds like you've got a light roasted Yirgacheffe, which is what I think is the typical roast for these types of beans. :-)

Thank you for the explanation and quick reply. I guess my concern is/was how those flakes would affect the pull when I switch beans and grind for espresso since some of those flakes remain in the grinder. I grind a small amount of beans before grinding for espresso to "clean out" the left over grinds, but the flakes still show up in the espresso grind. I haven't pulled a shot with those grinds yet. Still learning.... :-)

The chaff isn't going to mess you up when it comes to espresso. The chaff is just about unavoidable in a lighter roast, and I've never encountered any issues what so ever when pulling shots with it.

Hi Pete,
Yirgacheffe has a lot of chaff. I don't think it makes a perceptible difference in taste so I wouldn't worry about it. On the other hand roasting the stuff can be exciting. I can almost always count on a chaff fire with it.

Hi Phil, boy it sure does have alot of chaff. Leaves it behind in the grinder too! So far, I haven't had any problems brewing though. Good tasting brew too! Haven't tried grinding for espresso yet, but will very soon Thanks for the reply...
