Hey everyone! I'm going on a camping trip tomorrow. And I found an old Mok(k?)a pot in a box at my place.
Well, after doing some research I realized I messed up...
- The moka pot wasn't stored in separate parts (no corrosion has formed though!) - It hasn't been used for ages - I washed it pretty heavily with soap
Also some dark spots formed in the water reservoire which I wasn't able to get off (could it be black fungus?)
Now, my question is, and it'll probably sounds ridiculous. Is it okay to use? You aren't going to die really quickly from one glass of whisky per day, but a bottle.. Because I've heard about the aluminum and that it could be bad for your health, so that on top of all my wrong-doings, how unhealthy would it be to drink coffee like that for a week? More like the glass, or more like the bottle per day?

Remco, without seeing your pot it's difficult to be certain, but it doesn't sound like anything to be too concerned about. Aluminum moka pots often develop blackish spots in the reservoir. The aluminum itself is not something to be worried about. If I were you I'd brew a few pots of coffee before going just to clean off any soapy or off flavors that may be imparted, and also to become aquainted with how it works. You needn't drink the coffee, but maybe taste it to see what it's like. Frankly, the biggest risk isn't that you'll inadvertantly poison yourself, it's that you'll brew overextracted, overheated, muddy coffee that tastes like crap. Hopefully this will not be the case. The spots are actually that icky black goo that come out of those biological warfare containers on the movie Prometheus. If left on its own it will develop into the inseminators that later will result in the development of the xenomorphs.

Metal usually doesn't molder. A lot of moka pots are made of aluminium, and those black spots are probably a sign of oxidisation, which poses no hazard to your health.
