My mom sometimes uses my Bialetti stainless moka pot and almost everytime she does, she forgets about it and leaves it on the stove until well past the point where all the water in the pot has evaporated. This has led to a lot of little black spots on the inside of the pot. I used to be able to get rid of most of the little spots by soaking the thing in soap and scrubbing it with a sponge. This time though she must have left it on the stove really long because the spots are larger than i've seen and soaking and scrubbing doesn't seem to work.
I'd just like to know if anyone knows if it's safe to continue using it like this or if the stains cause some sort of health risk.

This has happened to me, too. Nothing that I've found gets those black spots off. I've tried scrubbing with Bon Ami, making a paste out of baking soda, baking soda and vinegar, soaking, nothing. Has anyone found a fix for this, or am I just out of luck?

One of my SS pots that travels and camps is pretty nasty looking from over heating and the bottom half of the outside is black from camp fires. In my mind it is stainless steel so I do not worry about it.

I should have clarified that my pot is aluminum, not SS. Also, the black spots are on the inside of the pot where you put the water, not the outside. It looks like slimy mold. The Bialetti rep said that those black spots are normal and asked me to send a photo. I'll post an update when I hear back from them.

Aluminum, yes I have had mold grow in mine when they sat with moisture in them. Aluminum also pits with oxidation and can get very ugly over time. I keep a spray bottle around with a bleach, water dilution for killing things in the kitchen, I do spray my aluminum moka pots with this to avoid anything growing in it.

My thing is soaking the pots in a TON of cut up lemons and salt. Seems to eat away at it pretty good. Let it soak for a few days, repeatedly changing the water to hot.
