Subject: Grinded coffee (drip) - How long will it last?

Hi!

Since I bought my Rancilio Rocky grinder I have grinded some small amounts of coffee for my grandparents a few times, since it taste much better than the coffee I get at the stores (cheaper too).
Now, I want to grind some more coffee that could last a few days, but there is something I wonder about. How long will the grinded coffee last (or taste good)?

I have read somewhere that the coffee is only fresh for a few hours. Is there a great difference in taste after 1-2 days?
Will a airtight plastic bag keep it fresh longer?

Thank you for answers :-)

The uberGeeks here will be shocked at me saying this but...

Yes, it will be better. Protect it from light and exposure to air. Buying them one of those containers you can evacuate much of the air from would be a great gift and you can add fresh coffee to it regularly. (I would pour out whatever is left from the last time.)

Last year, I introduced a friend to Intelligentisa. She lives in a place where McDonalds is considered great coffee. She was immediately in love. She did not own a grinder and at the time could not afford one and took 1 pound of it home. She shared some with her mother and they both really enjoy it and several times she has mail ordered ground coffee from one of the 'good' coffee roasters. She recently bought an inexpensive 'decent' burr grinder, again, one most people here wouldn't own. But I honestly feel that if you improve the experience it is worth it, even if you do not bring it to the pinnacle of the mountain.

So the rule of fifteens gives you fifteen minutes out of the grinder. It's been shown that the grounds can be oxidizing in as little as 2 minutes, losing aroma (and flavor in general). The standard CG answer is going to be to get a grinder, and brew as close to grinding as possible.

However...

Most people can't be bothered (though a $20 whirley-blade type is a nice starting point). I would still contend that well-roasted coffee, ground somewhat recently, will be better than whatever grocery store swill folks are used to choking down (with half a cup of cream and a couple tablespoons of sugar to boot).

Thanks for good answers!
I will try it out, but im just going to grind up for 2-4 days. I regret that I throwed away a "breathing" coffeebag I got when I bought some coffee at a baristashop.
I will try with a plasticbag or the bag the coffee bag the beans originally was in and try to seal it.

It'll last until it gets stale.

LOL

Mason jar, air tight, different sizes. Light protection, use a paper bag.

Babbie's Rule* of Fifteens:
-- Green (unroasted) coffee beans should be roasted within 15 months, or they go stale.
-- Roasted coffee beans should be ground within 15 days, or they go stale.
-- Ground coffee should be used within 15 minutes, or it goes stale.

Your choice.

Cheers,
Jason

* OK, so there are very few hard-and-fast "rules" -- more like "rules-of-thumb."

Has anyone ever tried to vac seal ground coffee in say 60g paks for individual pot usage? Not trying to steal the thread, but since it's a storage post...
