I just got some Colombian (3rd place in COE), roasted to full city+. Tastes bland like supermarket coffee. Even the aeropress made a poor cup. Anyone have experience with Colombian coffees?
I'm roasting it myself with HG/BM. I just did another roast this morning and took it past 2nd a little, dark with some shine, after a rest it will look oily.
I don't know what a HG/BM is, one of the problems of getting older i suppose.
Colombian is sometimes taken dark, but i think it tastes pretty awful that way (personal view). I don't take the Colombians past 2nd, just to second would be the darkest I would go, but really bit before second is ideal.
You don't post any information on your roast times, 1st crack times, 2nd crack times or temperatures, so it's really very difficult to give you any help, because I can't tell whether you are doing anything wrong, or not...or anything you could try and change?
I suppose your question was originally does anyone have any experience of roasting Colombian....maybe i should have just answered YES ;-)
Try getting to 1st crack a few minutes later, say 12 minutes (apply the heat a little more gently), but aim to stop just before 2nd crack and try and keep the total roast time about the same....don't have that long gap between 1st and second, but obviously don't abuse the coffee by trying to get the roast after first crack to be done too soon.
Did you get this coffee from the GCBC. If so, I have roasted this with success. I found that right before second is the sweet spot. It kind of reminded me of Chocolate covered cherries....
