Subject: Is this a Joke!?! Pods and the Francis Francis X1

Purchased a Francis Francis X1 in Australia. Doesn't come with a tamper or Ground portafilter so I have to import a ground portafilter.
However, if I use ground coffee in it it immediately voids the warranty.

Can anyone shed any light onto why Francis Francis would do this in Australia? I have asked Illy here and they simply answer with "The machine is designed for Pod Use Only in Australia".
It even says so on the box.

I opened it up and the X1's instructions are all skewiffy. It has a diagram with numbers pointing to different parts of the machine but they get it wrong sometimes or say "See number 13" yet there is no 13 so you have to guess what they mean.

The pods are as weak as water-literally. There comes a splash of dark coffee then it just drips slowly no rats' tail extraction. Then it goes to rats' tail extraction but looks just like water.
No crema whatsoever. It dissipates as it drops it's just like watery white film that disappears.

Plus, when brewing it drips at the back and the steam attachment drips.

Also, There was a loud BANG when I tried to take the pod out after extraction the pod burst and hot ground coffee went everywhere! It was all up inside the machine and I am afraid it is stuck there. I don't think anyone will believe me if I say I haven't used ground coffee in it and I haven't at all yet. :(

Here the machine is $895 so I really can't afford to have a machine that won't make good coffee. They don't give refunds so please tell me the ground portafilter works better and that these other mishaps must be some kind of fault?

I really don't want to lose my X1 I love the design but the coffee has no crema/taste, I got a big sneeze and the pod ripped and the pod always sticks to the grouphead it never comes out by itself on the pod portafilter.

The part that holds the pod also comes off sometimes. I just try and tighten it on again.

Are these X1 "quirks" or what?
Please tell me there's a silver lining?

That's bullsh!t. You don't have to tell anybody you bought it...

Check your serial # to see if you can buy the grounds kit adapter.

WLL can hook you up. http://www.wholelattelove.com/Francis/x1_adapter.cfm

Does your grouphead look like this?

Oh, and not to get all snobbish, but pods truly suck and will never give you a good espresso. Throw them in your garden, they make passable time release fertilizer...

The machine, however is easily capable of this:

The machine in the 2nd pic you posted is a X5 not an X1.

The grouphead does seem to look like that.

Right, that's my machine.

Hmmm, I thought they were all similar internally, just packaged into different housings. I know the X3 has the same guts as the X5

Can you snap a picture of your grouphead when you get a chance? Use the force.

Just curious.  For this shot, what bean (or blend) are you using?  How did the shot settle? I can get what I would call very good crema (using a variety of SO beans, and blends),  but I see a lot of pics (like yours) where almost the entire shot is crema (at least at the start).  I would like to get to that level, even if it is just to take a pic :-)

Thanks

Chris

I don't have a digi cam but the shot you posted of that grouphead looks the same as my X1 grouphead.

I only bought the X1 because people here told me despite the Aussie X1's being sold as Pod Only I would still be able to use a ground portafilter on them.

It's just a shame that the warranty is void if you use a ground head. :(

I guess maybe they want to promote pod coffee more here-but I am a real coffee purist so I prefer to use grounds.

Chris, that is the fabled Code Brown and it is no joke. Read the whole thread if you have time, then do a search for Code Brown. You will only receive the freshest of the fresh from Coffee Emergency. Looks like I have posted the same picture twice, doh!

If you've got the version that accepts the normal portafilter, don't worry about it. There would be no way to tell which portafilter was used. You can't do anything to hurt the machine, trust me. Send the friendly folks at WholeLatteLove the serial # off your machine, they will help you out.

Whole Latte Love don't sell OS but La Gondola do apparently.

AS for the X1 machine problems, do you think they're just X1 quirks or real problems that I should get fixed? I'm not sure what the norm is with them.

The pod coffee is truly truly weak and awful. Bleurgh can't drink it. Might get one good cup out of 4 pods.
