Subject: Krups Combo Grinder/Brewer...I am frightened

I went out and purchased the Krups 625.42 (10-Cup Combination Grinder & Brewer with Programmable Timer, Black) last night. Being a novice, I was very excited at owning my my first grinder and to have it combined with a brand new brewer Oh What Joy!!
I didnt have the correct no.4 cone filters so i was unable to use it as of yet..
However, I was just given a lecture by a coffee salesman at bed bath and beyond and just read about 45 extremely negative amazon.com reviews (see below) about the machine I just bought! Should I try and return this model??

Does anyone else around hgere have expereince with this Krups model.
The BBB salesman also went on to say the Krups had gone out of business and someone else is taking over their brand name.
This sucks I am in shock. God-damn its hard to make a cup of coffee in this town!

KRUPS OF DOOM

So if this combo brewer/grinder is as bad as they say can anyone else reccomend a diffrent combo or should I just get the dedicated respective machines.

Thanx,

Bill D.

Ok..
First..Krups did not go out of business or if they did it's news to me and is not mentioned on the corporate website.  This model has been discontinued though.

Second..I haven't owned one but some of the same reviews you mentioned do sound troublesome. They're not all commenting on the quality of the coffee but actual mechanical failures.

I personally don't like "integrated" units and this would fall into that realm.
If there is a problem with the grinder, how do you get to it?
What if you want to prepare your coffee in a different way?
One thing fails and you're out a grinder and the coffee maker.

I would suggest that you stick to the consumer reviews at Coffeegeek's website.  You are more likely to get an educated coffee person's opinion on the quality of the coffee and you will also get a good evaluation of the mechanical problem potential.

I would buy a seperate grinder.

I would stay away from that "slick" BBB salesman.

Good Luck!

There are several problems with any grind and brew system. I have no experience with home models but more than my fair share with Grindmaster Grind and Brew systems.

1) The grind comes out in a cone shape so bed depth is non-existant. Normally you shake the brew basket around to level the grounds.

2) The grind chamber outlet is directly above the center of the brew basket so guess where all the steam goes? It gums everything up making the portal all but useless in a very short time.

3) Once the portal is gummed up and closed any ground coffee is unable to exit the chamber causing a pulverization of the backed up grounds . Once this happens the grinder is sure to seize up, probably permanently.

4) It would seem to me that grind settings would also be affected. Are you able to adjust the volume and courseness easily?

5) Would I take it back? Yes I would. It's an idea that theoretically could work well but doesn't.

Me again. I just read the information on the Amazon link and it says the unit is no longer available. It has a 2 star rating. It uses steam to "dry" the grind chamber. Steam to dry??? It comes with a built in timer and filter. This seems like an awful lot of features for a $49.00 machine. I would certainly stay away from it. Kevin

You've probably moved on in coffee evolution but I saw your fear in the Krups Aroma grinder/brewer and I don't work for Krups but this is another case of fine machine. So they discontinue it.
My parents have had the Cuisinart grind/brews since they first came out. Too many parts to clean. And plastic simply decomposes with soap and hot water, in or out of the dishwasher. I've had my Krups since spring 2003 and never had a problem. The grinder is loud but I don't sleep in the kitchen so it doesn't bother me. It does 'wash' down the grind chamber with hot water and steam and that does make it wet and unusable for a follow on grind-brew cycle but I've found that 10+ cups of really good coffee is sufficient for my house. Its not a commercial unit and shouldn't be used as one. Its so easy to clean; only the basket and the carafe have to be washed.
Don't believe, salespeople. They have ulterior motives.
This model is discontinued but if you search real well, you can find one. Krups Model 625-42. I'm gonna get another as a spare because I've gotten my money's worth out of this one. I would agree the interlock system on the timer is a bit excessive but once you figure out how it plays, it plays well.
I haven't seen another as smart and tasty! If someone can challenge that, let me know. I'm always interested in better mousetraps.

I had a krups grind & brew a coupek of years ago before i knew much about coffee...
but i can tell you the i hated it ...it took an extremely long time to brew, and it really never did an outstnding job at "cleaning the grind area out" as it said it would...the pot dribbled every time it was poured from....I shelved it..(as i recieved it from my MOM for XMAS!(she thought i loved it...(which I did till I actually used it)ouch...)
anyway i dumped it on ebay eventually...
you can do better...grind and brew i don't know...convienence has a price I guess/'//
my advice.... amazon reviews are generally true more than they are false.....
good luck,
kel

You might want to try the Capresso Coffee Team Luxe.  It has an adjustable conical burr grinder and swings the filter basket from the fill station to the brew station.  It is pretty slick.  I stopped using it because no matter what I did, I could not get a very strong cup of coffee, especially if I brewed a whole pot.  I would use the largest dump of ground coffee and varying grind fineness, but if I made more than 6 "cups," the coffee would be too weak.  I now use a Krups Mocha Brew, but it is as much of a hassle as any other coffee maker.  It is simple, however.  If you have gobs of money, try a superautomatic like the Jura/Capresso S9.  It costs about $2k, but it makes pretty damn good coffee, espresso, and can make lattes (the frothing wand doesn't froth milk enough for true Capuccino, but I hate all that froth anyway).

Yes, take it back if you can.  We went through two of those machines in a year.  Coffee didn't seem too bad at first.  Had a good temp.  Good flavor.  After a few months the first machine started to brew the coffee too hot.   I think the thing then took a dive.  THe second machine if I remember correctly, brewed too cold after a while and then made some strange noises.  Yikes!! Our third( and 4th) machines were grind and brews also.  You'd think we would've learned our lesson.  Let me explain.  We bought a Cuisinart grind n' brew after the Krups.  THat one didn't brew the coffee at all (after two years of use however.)  They sent us a free one because the warranty was 3 years.  The second one died a year later.  I don't even know if I remember why anymore.  I think it was letting through grinds and just brewed cold.  So we decided to just get a plain old Braun and now this thing brews good one time and bad the next.  What does a person have to do to get a good coffee maker.  We brew 2 pots a day.  So we don't abuse our machines.  Help!!  (End Rant).
