Subject: I need help with French Press brewing methods!
 

Hello everyone, I recently joined Coffeegeek because just a few days ago I received a French Press from my Reddit Secret Santa(ugly mug exchange). I have waited months planning to get a french press because I finally wanted to get off drinking instant coffee. But now I don't really know the measurements or ratios of the amount of coffee and water. The french press is a total of 8glasses/34 ounces. However I don't know exactly how much I'm accurately putting in coffee cause the scoop that came with the french press is 7 grams. All I want out of it is only 1 cup of coffee. Would really appreciate the help!

Hi Andrew,

You may get better results by brewing big, smaller amounts in a large press may lose heat more quickly. Perhaps be dilligent about pre-heating just before brewing?

As to the number of scoops, anywhere between 2 & 3 scoops per mug (14-21g of coffee to 250g water) can work depending on your taste, or the coffee/roast level you are using. You might not get a full 34oz in the pot allowing for the coffee and any blooming.

Some digital scales (2kg/0.1g) can help you be more consistent & may prove useful in the future as you try new brewing methods?

This is the key. IF you can use a scale, preferably one that weighs to 0.1g resolution, you can get started in this ratio range.  As he said, you'll likely get better results making a larger volume than one cup in such a big press and pre-heating the press will help a lot.

Notice, he put the water and the beans in terms of weight, not volume.  This is important.

Things you need to do to dial in to your taste include:

grinding your beans fresh for each preparation
using water at proper brewing temperature (typically 200F)
adjusting dose weight up or down to tweak the results

Always remember the most important thing is what ends up in your cup!

The ratio of coffee to water that you should use is that which tastes best to you.  It will be affected by the grind, the roast, the steeping time, and the freshness of the coffee.  Those are the factors that I am aware of, but there could also be other factors.
I use 12.5 grams freshly ground coffee to 250 grams water (a water:coffee ratio of 20:1), and steep for 4 minutes before plunging the press, but before my wife passed away, she preferred a water:coffee ratio of about 35:1.
On the other hand, MWJB's suggestion would result in a slightly stronger to much stronger cup of coffee.

The french press you received is best for brewing large pots. A 3- or 4-cup press is better for brewing for one person. Something like this:

Like Alan, I brew personal press pots using 250 grams of water and use a 4 minute steep prior to pressing. But I tend to start off with something like a 15 gram dose, closer to a 17:1 water-to-coffee ratio.

One of the nice things about immersion brewing is that it is very easy to scale brew volume up or down while keeping other variables (more or less) constant.

The ratio we use for FP is 10 grams of grind for every 6 oz of brew..  Almost the same as for pour over, which is 10 grams for every 5 oz of brew.

Everyone already hit on the coffee / water ratio.

Started drinking a lot of french press after my one espresso machine exploded.

Grind LARGE pebble sand size, or just larger than the big pebble sand. (experiment to your taste preference)
I use water just under boiling, actually my water cooler has the perfect temperature.
Four and a half minuets to five are the average that you would receive at a cafe.
I really prefer letting mine steep longer with more coffee than suggested. After 10-15 minuets I take a rice spoon (the large plastic ones) and scoop out all the excess grounds off the top before I plunge it down. Don't push too fast or forceful, just a steady easy push. Let it sit for a second.
Then pour  & enjoy.
Found this method after watching the worlds finals. seems to have a more appealing taste with less grit

never drink the last bit in you cup from a french press
