I just bought a Melitta BCM4 on ebay. I selected this coffee maker because of the many positive comments online about the taste of coffee that it makes. Of course, there are no detailed instructions for cleaning. Looking at the lid over the v shaped grounds basket,  I see that it can be taken apart to clean. It looks easy to break. How can I remove the smaller round top without cracking it?
It is such a shame that this coffee maker is no longer produced. The taste of this coffee is so smooth and lacks the bitterness of any other that I can remember. What an improvement over Mr.Coffee!! Without a scale, we are still learning the best amount of grounds to use. I do use more grounds than I did in Mr Coffee.
All suggestions will be helpful.

Hi Tboy,

Welcome to the forum.

You did well. This brewer will rival a TV.  It does have its little faults however.  You just found one.  The tabs on the shower head cover do break easily.  I suggest that you carefully remove the cover then grind a good bit of the barbs off the tabs.  This will make it easier to clean.  If you are brewing supermarket pre-ground swill the need not great.  I you brew freshly roasted coffee the bloom can cause grounds to get in that area so you want to clean it.  If the tabs break off it is no big deal gravity keeps the cover in place.

Two more tips:

After the coffee  brewed, turn off the heater. The hot plate is too hot and will ruin the coffee.

Pouring coffee from some of the BCM 4 carafes can be tricky.  You just have to be slow and careful and develop the skill.

Phil
