I got myself a Technivorm Moccamaster (from Roastmasters.com) with the round body and thermal carafe, and out of the box it appears to be defective.
I followed the instructions, filled it with water, turned it on, and both the power light and the light indicating the carafe is in place go on, but the heating element doesn't do anything. I don't think I'm goofing up anywhere; it's pretty straightforward. Just extremely frustrated it isn't working. (On the bright side, at I was up early enough that I had time for the Chemex after the TVM let me down.)
From searching here and elsewhere, a defective Technivorm seems to be pretty rare. If you have any suspicion of something dumb I may be doing, I'd appreciate it; or other advice. Otherwise, I'm calling the vendor first thing tomorrow and hope to swap it out. (I did test that the float that turns on the heating element wasn't stuck somehow, and it wasn't.) Many thanks.
It's true, you don't often hear about defective TVs (that is, straight out of a new box). But I guess it happens. I have the same model and haven't had problems. When you switch on a working unit, the heating function starts up after a few seconds. If you've seen a TV in action, you know how that looks: the heating action is both visible and audible. So yeah, there's probably some malfunction with your machine and you should contact the vendor immediately. Hope it works out, good luck!

You probably noticed the little button at the base. If the carafe isn't in place - pushing in the button - it won't boil. Either way, the light by the switch should come on when you turn on the switch. If the light is on and the button is pressed in, it should boil or there's a problem.

If the water stays in the upper chamber the element will not activate - sometimes on new TV's the valve that allows the water to flow down into the heating coil is sticky (or maybe vapor locked?) - try shaking the unit gently to see if the water level in the tank starts dropping - if it does then the heating element will kick on unless there are more serious issues - good luck!
I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?
