I am trying to making Café au Lait (French pressed coffee with milk in a 1:1 ratio).

Should I go for:

A) Baratza Encore + Espro Press
B) Baratza Virtuoso + Bodum Chambord

Which choice would you recommend, for my specific purpose of making café au lait?

(Obviously, I'm driven to this tradeoff by my limited budget, otherwise I could have gone Virtuoso + Espro)

Disclaimer: I have no experience with the Espro Press, though I'd love to give it a shot. I do, however, have a Bodum Chambord, and it's good.

Most on this forum would recommend getting the better grinder. That's one of your first and most important investments. Thus, I would recommend getting the Virtuoso w/ Preciso Burrs. You're going to get a much better grind from that than with the Encore, and many less fines too. You would also get better coarse grind, so less sludge in the Bodum.

Just my two cents. Always go for the better grinder.

Thanks!

Trouble is, we now have one vote for A and one vote for B! :(

Have you thought about getting a Virtuoso refurb from the Baratza website? Not sure if any are listed, but if you check every day or so, there's usually new listings every week. A refurbed Virtuoso would probably be at an $60-$80 discount, probably freeing you up for an Espro Press as well.

I have thought of it - unfortunately there are no refurb Virtuousos at the moment, and I'd rather not wait for weeks! I guess the next Virtuouso could turn up next week or after 4 months.

Though I voted for A (and still would), I agree the grinder does make the biggest difference in general.  Certainly for espresso, I would recommend choosing the option where you pick the best grinder possible and compromise on the machine, rather than vice versa. Now, I have to say I haven't used either the Virtuoso or the Encore.  My understanding is the Encore is more than adequate for all non-espresso methods.  I feel the difference between the Bodum and the Espro press is huge (my experience), using my OE Lido.  Having said that, I don't think you'd be displeased with either option.  Hopefully, you'll get more opinions and then (assuming you plan to go with the popularity vote), you'll have your answer.

btw: Baratza updates the list of available refurbished units on Thursday mornings, so no point checking more than once a week.

Did not know that. Thanks!

And while the Encore is more than enough for most manual brew methods, it does produce significantly more fines that the Virtuoso with Preciso burrs. Not something that'll make a huge difference in the cup, but for someone with a refined palate, there will be some difference.

Okay, so emradguy: you testify that the difference between the Bodum and Espro is huge, whereas tglodjo: you testify that there will be some in-cup difference between the Encore and the Virtuoso, but not huge.

Going by that would seem to suggest Encore + Espro.

At any rate, I'll wait till Thursday for more opinions, and new refurbs to come in.

Thanks all!
