I've been wondering about the relative importance to the caffeine content of a cup of coffee of quantity of coffee used to brew a cup vs. the quantity of water that comes into contact with the coffee (and the time of diffusion) .    For example, Aeropress uses about twice the amount of coffee per cup than does, say, a Melitta drip cone.  However, only a small quantity of water is involved in diffusion for Aeropress compared with Melitta, and the diffusion time is much longer for Melitta.  So does quantity of coffee trump trump quantity of water and diffusion time, or vice-versa?  I really like Aeropress, but using twice the amount of coffee per cup (as per their instructions) kind of scares me because I am trying to limit my caffeine intake, more or less.  I don't trust my own perceptions of how much caffeine is coursing through my blood.

Thanks,
k.

This was a really useful and (frighteningly) informed response.  You've basically answered every question I've ever had about caffeine content in coffee, how to measure it, and the quality of most of the data used to report comparative caffeine content.  THANKS!

I didn't tell you "how" to measure it.

Step 1) get yourself some methylene chloride...
