A Clever will work _best_ with freshly ground coffee, but it will work a lot better than a pod or K-cup machine when used with coffee ground that morning, and roasted in the past couple of weeks vs the same coffee in a refillable K-cup or worse still, commercial pods or K-cups at the same price per cup. I don't think it's any messier or longer to use than a K-cup machine either - both need water to be heated (either by checking the Keurig has water and turning it on to warm up, or by boiling a kettle), coffee to be added and the brew started (dump grounds in filter or insert K-cup, add water or hit brew button) and a clean up step (drain CCD into cup, throw out filter and grounds, or remove K-cup from machine and dispose of and collect coffee in mug). There's maybe one more step with the CCD, but a much better range of coffee at a much more attractive price. The only thing is that you do have pour the water at the right time after it boils, and drain the CCD at the right time after filling. Using my CCD, I do the latter at my desk.
