I'm looking for a decent drip machine in the sub-$100 price range.

Requirements:
  • New, not used
  • Good brew temperature
  • 10 "cup" capacity (using the marketing defnition of about 5-6 oz.)
  • A drip machine (not a pour-over cone, FP, vac pot, etc)

A thermal carafe would be a nice plus, but it's not a requirement.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.
Jack

Wow, I thought someone would have an opinion to share. No love for drip coffee here any more? Or, is it something I said?

It's probably your requirements to be <100 USD with a capacity of at least 50oz which rules out most good domestic machines.

I think you're right. However, I paid $16.79 (plus shipping) for my Melitta Clarity, so I thought $100 was ample allowance for inflation.

I posted the same question on another site (after no suggestions from my two topics here) and I got some suggestions, along with the caveat that they were over my budget.  If that's the only way, I guess I'll have to spend a little more.  I'm looking at the Bonavita 8 Cup Exceptional Brew Coffee Maker.  It's less than 10 cups, and more than $100--but there seem to be zero options under $100, unless I bought something used.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Personally I like the Bunn Velocity Brew thermal carafe. Bought one for my cousin so I'd have good coffee when I visited the farm. They, and I, like it very much.

Hmmm. About the same price as the Bonavita, but it's a 10 cup machine. Wonder why this wasn't SCAA certified. The BUNN HG Phase Brew IS. I looked at this one, but the one with the thermal carafe is almost as much as the Bonavita. And, based on my research, it seems there may be some quality control issues with the Phase Brew system.

I love my BraZen brewer, but it's well over your budget. How a bout looking for a Bunn refers, like an STX (thermal) or the (I think) GTX, glass carafe, about $119 new. 1.7 liters.
I have the STX, and still use it in conjunction with the BraZen.

Hello, again.

I have the original European Melitta Thermo Excellent, which is re-badged as the Bonavita in the USA. It is only 1.25l though.  I can't work that out in oz but it's quite a bit less than 50/60 I think.

I also have (2 of) Technivorms, which are also 1.25l

Can recommend both units based on personal experience. There are heaps of posts discussing them.  Mostly positive, but inevitably some folk don't like them as is the case with all the brewers that have ever been mentioned on here ;o)

BB&B has Bunn Velocity NHS --- $88.00 w/20% off coupon before tax (retail $109.99). That's with glass carafe so you'd need to decant into a thermal carafe immediately when brewing's done. Glass-lined (my preference) and stainless-lined carafes are not expensive and can be purchased at that same store.

IF you get a Bunn, you'll definitely need to order a FREE flow restrictor spray head from Bunn.

Is the Bunn® Velocity Brew™ 10-Cup BTX Thermal Coffee Maker the same as the NHS, but with a thermal carafe? I'd pay the extra for that, especially with a 20% off coupon.

Bunn seems to like the idea of keeping the water hot all the time, ready to brew.  I'm not crazy about that feature. On the other hand, their Phase Brew system would test my patience (six minutes to heat the water, and ~4 minutes to brew).  I'm still attracted to the Bonavita because it doesn't do either, and it just LOOKS better.  Some of the Bunn machines look pretty industrial. Yeah, I know that's a weird thing to say, coming from someone who has a Cunill Tranquilo on the counter. ;)
