I've been looking at scales to improve my pour over brews. The one's that measure less than 1 gram are expensive. How often would I use fractional grams and would I taste the difference? Thank you, Jerry Dorn

It depends on whether you're talking about measuring water or beans. For water, 1g is fine. For beans, it's marginally adequate. Small scales to measure .1g accuracy are cheaply and easily available online. I use a small "jewelry" type scale to measure beans.

Google "Digital gram scale .01" and check eBay. There are many which will work fine and are reasonably priced. For espresso and similar methods that use a relatively small amount of coffee, .1 gram resolution is virtually required. The difference in a one gram variation is a lot and makes achieving accurate grind adjustments difficult. For most any other method, and for most folks, 1 gram resolution is sufficient.

Things to look for are a quick response time, AC power option and no automatic shut-off. I've had the Bonavita Digital Scale for over six months and really like it. Not too long ago Amazon had a special purchase ffer going and had it listed for $30. I originally paid something like $90 for mine and decided to get a spare for back-up or give it to my daughter when she gets her own place. Take care!
The pathologically precise are annoying, but right!
