Subject: Chemex manufacturing quality control lacking?

Today I purchased two 6 cup Chemex brewers. The ones with the glass handle. Same merchant. Sealed boxes. When I took them out of the box, one was 110 grams lighter than the other. The cone portion seemed ever so slightly thinner. The handle seemed thinner.

The halfway point at the bottom of the bubble was also not the same. Water weight differed by 15 grams between them, measured to the bottom of the bubble.

If these are machine manufactured, should they be identical?  Should I contact Chemex?

Poor QC.

I'd be amazed if they were identical, what is the difference as a % of total weight? Most of my glasses, of the same type, vary by 10-15%.

Put them on some scales when brewing to measure brew water weight, not volume.

One brewer weighs 587 grams   The lighter one weighs 110 grand less. That is almost 19%.

Maybe they changed spec. between the two units you bought? What does it matter anyway?

I was fearful about the lighter one being slightly thinner and more fragile.

Who knows but probably doesn't matter too much. I've had my wood collar Chemex for years but with glass you only need a minor slip up and it's a pile of shards.

If it breaks in normal use that would be a different matter and I'd take it up with Chemex then.

There's also a hand blown version which would be heavier and I believe has a slightly different shape. I'm assuming you haven't got one of each.

I had the hand blown. It is thicker. My hand coordination made it difficult to handle. I kept burning myself. My partner complained too.

Al. I brew 12 ounces on occasion. 24 most often and sometimes 36 ounces. I suspect I need two sizes but I might be wrong.

Any thoughts.
