I really need to save money so I would like to cut back on my daily Starbucks latte. I tried to quit cold turkey and was sleepy all day. I don't have the money for an espresso maker and grinder setup right now but can I buy a coffee maker and a frother and make a cappuccino or is it going to taste significantly different since I am using coffee and not espresso. I would like to spend no more than $200 to get my daily latte fix. I can also learn to use a moka pot, French press or so something else that is inexpensive as long as it tastes good.

Get an Aerobie(AeroPress), a decent grinder...A refurb Baratza Encore for instance, and your frother. You should be able to make VERY taste drinks. Try an El Salvador or perhaps a Sumatra bean. Supermarket beans or starbucks won't give you any freshness. Spend the money on decent beans from a local roaster. Some sell beans getting a bit long in the tooth, but still PLENTY drinkable.

First of all, you cannot actually make a real latte or cappuccino from a regular coffee maker but still you can make drinks almost similar with it. Of course, it is not possible to foam milk without the wand in the espresso machine so never expect to have that one. As much as possible, you can get at least a stove top espresso maker. In frothing the milk, bodum frother can be used.
Did you know...? Dark roast coffees actually have less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the fact that the process of roasting burns off caffeine. www.coffeeloversmag.com/theMagazine
