A little tip to doing this right: while filling the filter basket with grounds, tap down the funnel tube on your counter surface to flatten out the coffee then fill more to make the coffee into a pyramid shape.

I have to drink decaf for medical reasons. Since shops rarely have a pot of decaf brewed, this means when I go to a coffee shop and order a "large decaf" I often get an americano.
I can't stand americanos. They taste completely different from brewed coffee. I get particularly annoyed when the coffee shop doesn't even ask me if its okay--they just make the americano and hand it off to me. I tend to boycott those places now, and unfortunately my boycott list seems to grow bigger and bigger as more places do this.
Amusingly enough, in the New Orleans area the only coffee shop that has yet (fingers crossed) tried to pass off an americano to me as a large decaf is Starbucks. For all of the flack they get on these forums for roasting too darkly, at least they seem content quietly to pour hot water over a portable filter setup and give me my decaf without complaining about having to brew it up special.
For those who say decaf isn't coffee either (and you may be right) it is the best I can do and I do love coffee...
I am glad the original poster has found his perfect formula though and is enjoying it.
Don't fall for that nonsense. We who must drink decaf and still choose to drink it, must truly appreciate the joy of drinking coffee. And we search farther and wider to find the best.
