Hello, hello. I have a few vacuum pots. A super elegant narrow neck silex, a sunbeam electric a Cory DRU/L. Recently I found a Cory top with the DIU code. It was only a few bucks so I purchased it just to have around. It's a gasket-less top. I am having problems finding a matching lower.
I wonder if these uppers and lowers are interchangeable. Can a DIU work with a DCL? Or another Cory bottom? I am wondering how this gasket-less pot operates.
Does anyone know if there's a database of the various models Cory made.
I believe the gaskletless pots were made during WWII when rubber was in short supply and went to military uses. Remember reading of gas rationing? There was surplus gas in the US. So much so that it was being burned off in the Midwest. So why ration gas? To keep folks from driving and using up tires. The government entities decided that the populous would never believe that there was a rubber shortage and so created the gas shortage and rationing [source - "The Warlords of Washington" by Bruce Catton].
I discovered that the gasketless Cory has three sizes: 4-6 cup coded: DNU and DNL, 6-8 cup coded:DCU and DCL, 8-12 cup coded: DIU and DIL
These are three gasketless Cory pots that I know about. I have the small and the medium and need the bottom for the large model. These things are really terrific.
I wonder why the makers of these pots returned to using rubber gaskets. Aren't the gasketless pots cheaper to produce? Interesting stuff thanks for the post.
