We knew!!! A lot of us have them. Why?, drip is easier, can use a timer to get started before you wake up and there is less mess. Mr Coffee was the biggest player in the auto drip movement. Metal pots are OK but glass pots do not have the ability to taint the flavor as metal possibly can.

I've had a Cona vac pot (a '70s vintage NOS one bought direct from the manufacturer) for the last 8 years (and my housemate had one before that). Now everyone I've had to buy wedding presents for (and who drinks coffee) has one. They're a great alternative to press pot or drip for a larger size pot of coffee, and nice and showy for after dinner use ;)
Why were they out of fashion? More expensive, and somewhat harder to clean and to use than an autodrip.

I got an old Sunbeam Coffeemaster at a consignment shop (which may be the same model as yours.)
I just brewed coffee in it for the first time and it was incredible. It was magical, like the first time I made a french press and the stars aligned and I had the perfect cup of coffee. Or the first time I pulled a heavenly shot of espresso.
The difference? It didn't take hours of practice. Just a little foolin with the grind. And no residue left over in the cup. And the most full bodied non-espresso coffee I've ever put in my mouth.
Lots of things changed in the 50's. Pre-ground coffee became widely available and people started using percolators. It wasn't really a good time for quality coffee.
