I'm willing to believe it's a lemon, but what's especially odd is that an email fired off to Baratza has returned the response that the machine is performing up to spec... Now, I don't know the poster, but assuming what he says is true -- it's not a response I feel particularly confident about.

Eh, who knows. If you're really concerned, just get an OE LIDO. They do a lot less volume than Baratza, which probably helps with the QC going out the door. The LIDO's grind is awesome.

I am the original poster over on H-B. I am not sure what is going on with it. There were so many good reviews about this burr set, and that is why I went with it. I am not sure if it performs differently in the Virtuoso or if there is an issue with my unit. Baratza says it is fine.
The Virtuoso has only 40 (Macro) indexing steps, the Preciso because of the extra adjustment/adjuster (Micro) turns that 40 steps into 440 (11x40). The only difference internally between the two grinders is the extra Micro ring (different calibration ring/s assembly) & the indexing bezel on the front for the Preciso, & of course the Lictenstein burr set versus the old Virtuoso burr set.
Installing the new Lictenstein burr set in the old style Virtuoso won't make a true Preciso (with 440 steps), it'll just be a Virtuoso with Preciso burrs (a pseudo Preciso) & 40 coarse steps.

I was contemplating calling but after I got an email back from Kyle stating it is within spec I am assuming that ship has sailed. I do not want tocome off as someone bad mouthing the company or anything. They obviously have a great product based on all the glowing reviews. I am just not sure what is going on with the problem I am having. I am willing to trouble shoot. I have tried different beans, different levels of roast and some other things that have not made a difference. Maybe it's possible that I was expecting too much. I am not sure at this point.
Yes, what I was thinking when I was composing that post was more of a difficulty in matching a fine (not press) grind., as 40 wider steps isn't as accurate as 440 obviously..
For what Matt's doing & for any other grind size for that matter what I'm saying is that the output grind particle size/ratio (Preciso's #24 should = Virtuoso's #24) should be the same for the two comparison grinders (Preciso, & Virtuoso with Preciso burrs {Lictenstein burrset}). Of course there'll not be the same degree of adjustability I was inferring & stating also.
