Bad experiences with defective Technivorm Moccamaster machines-- looking for an equivalent. Since reading the enthusiastic Cooke's Illustrated review of the Technivorm Moccamaster I have made three attempts to purchase this machine. Each machine leaked like a sieve (additionally, the second had a visible crack in the reservoir; the third was missing a critical part-- the pivoting wand at the top). But I'm not here to gripe about the Technivorm (though I would caution anyone against buying one). What I am looking for is something that brews its equivalent in coffee (i.e., another machine with a copper element) within the same approximate price range (an already hefty $300). Any thoughts? Thanks!

mmmmmmm well, several thoughts/questions/observations. Where did they leak from ? All from the same supplier ? Mail order or in-store ? Do you think the boxes had been opened/units taken out and re-packed ? Think you've been unfortunate to say the least Declared interest - I have a Technivorm and have always been happy with its quality. The Bonavita brewer gets very favourable reviews, and works very well (have one of those too !) and is I think cheaper in the US than Technivorms. Favourite new kid is the Behmor Brazen, about which much praise has been written on this forum. (No, I don't have one - they aren't available where I live). PS - be careful what you post in the probationary period. There are rules and reasons for them.

Honestly didn't mean to start a flame war when I signed up for the forum today-- was just looking for an answer to the question. I'll look at popcorn's thread-- thanks. To answer oldgearhead's questions: 1) the first machine had a slow leak that I discovered by filling the reservoir and leaving it overnight. I did brew from this machine, and the coffee was fantastic. 2) second and third machines had fast leaks through the seams in the bottom of the machines. You pour the water in and it drains immediately onto the kitchen counter. Never got to brew from these machines (the third was missing the wand). 3) first two machines were purchased in 2010 from a third party over Amazon (the second came as an exchange for the first). I can't remember the supplier. Third was purchased again via Amazon from "Duddy's Electronics." 4) don't know if the machiens were repackaged-- it's certainly possible I am frankly tempted for a fourth try. The coffee was that good and I couldn't find any other complaints like this on the internet (popcorn's soon-to-be-read thread notwithstanding). Plus, as far as I can tell, no one else makes copper element brewers.

You might consider buying the Techniform from Costco since they have a solid return policy and stand behind what they sell. I have no interest in Technivorm or Costco, in fact I'm very happy with my new Behmor Brazen.

While it has its minor faults, the Brazen from Behmor is $200 and features an all stainless steel heating reservoir, straight down short brew path into the coffee, and digital temperature adjustment and control system, programmable preinfusion, and more. Read the review on my website. It's major faults are around condensation on the reservoir lid which tends to drip on the counter when removed and the shower head holding condensed water which drip onto the die cast aluminum base. On the other hand, you will not find better customer service than that which you get from Joe and Behmor. No, I do not work for them, and no, I do not sell them.
