I saw a new fairly spendy Bodum Dripper at Peet's. It is a fairly impressive looking thing. I has a spiral copper heater which looks like it should be used for making moonshine. The water path is through glass to what looks like a silicon rubber shower head. I think it is a fairly nice looking unit. The "moonshine still" is behind clear plastic but it is at the back of the machine. If I were doing the styling it would be prominently on the front.
Can I recomend this thing to my friends? Here is a link to it:

I think the question is, "Why" would you recommend it to your friends? At $250 I feel it is overpriced. It's appearance makes it look like it was designed by Fisher Price (although the black is not too bad), but all the plastic makes it look quite cheap. No temperature control, no preinfusion.
For $50 less the Behmor Brazen is available - Calibration feature, timer, digital temperature control, programmable preinfusion, excellent water distribution, double-wall stainless carafe, stainless steel heating chamber, very large opening to fill reservoir, and Behmor support.
The style is unique but the internals are very nice - the copper element inside it looks similar to the one inside a Technivorm. I tested one of these making coffee for quite a few people over the period of a couple weeks. Women were drawn to the styling while all were pleased with the coffee. I do not think it brews better coffee than the Bonavita or Technivorm though.
I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?

To make a declaration to start with: I do like Bodum's designs. They are original and distinctive. Their simpler stuff looks the part and mostly works well. Among other Bodum stuff I have 2 stovetop Santos brewers - a very old one from the 70's, and a newer model. These are truly excellent, but are an exception in that the basic glass compnents have been in production with small modifications for a very long time.
With a few notable exception such as the above, Bodum are a very fashion-conscious company, constantly renewing their product range, so I'm far less keen on investing in their more expensive electrical stuff. It isn't necessarily that it doesn't work well (although the electric Santos is probably best forgotten) but more that like so many of their products they put them into production and then discontinue them after a fairly short while. Try getting routine spares for their Granos Espresso machine for example, and that isn't all that long ago.
This is a high price item. It has an attractive original design, and I'd guess from other posts it works well. But I'm also guessing it may not last that long in their catalogue. You can draw whatever conclusions you want from that, but I wouldn't be spending that sort of cash on one of these. I'd speculate that in a while you might find them heavily discounted as a discontinued item. They have an outlet store in the UK which is crammed with that sort of stuff.
